Solarize Michigan works to bring down the costs of at-home solar energy by using bulk buying, competitive bidding and community education. The campaign is focused on the three counties in the Great Lakes Bay region, Bay, Midland and Saginaw.
Solarize Michigan is led by the Institute for Energy Innovation, a Michigan non-profit organization, with help from 5 Lakes Energy, Saginaw Future, Midland Tomorrow, and Bay Future. Solarize Michigan is partnering with three pre-approved contractors with years of experience and strong records of customer service.
What is Solarize?
Developed in Portland, Oregon in 2010, “solarize” is a grassroots effort to speed up residential solar deployment through community education and bulk purchasing, all of which helps to reduce costs to customers.
Core elements include community outreach and education, competitive selection of an installer, and a limited-time offer. Solarize campaigns try to remove the usual barriers that get in a person’s way of getting solar on their roof, working to simplifying the process and make all the information available and bring down the upfront costs.
There are successful Solarize campaigns in several other states, including Connecticut, Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina. This will be the first solarize campaign in Michigan.
